With
thanks to David and Lin Schneider Odyssey Sea GlassWe
all love walking on the beach! It's an activity that appeals
to folks of all ages.
When you walk on the beach, do you enjoy picking up
things like shells, rocks, and driftwood? Most of us do! There are many
delightul objects to be found on the seashore.
If
you're like most people, you will take home some of these beachcombing
finds, whether it's just a few steps to your home or a plane ride away.
One
of the special finds on the beach is
sea glass or beach glass.
What is sea glass? Sea glass begins as,
well....trash. It was originally broken pieces of bottles or
other glassware objects that have ended up on a beach, whether from a
ship wrecked there during a storm, thrown there by beachgoers, or as
household garbage.
Between the action of the waves
and the exposure to sunlight and salt water, these glass shards are
tumbled and worn to become rounded, softly-glowing, frosted objects of
beauty.
For that reason, sea glass is also
called gems of the sea or mermaid's tears.
Many
people view collecting sea glass as their favorite hobby, and new
enthusiasts are starting in each day to combine the walks on the beach
with a "seaglass treaure hunt."
The beaches of
Florida and its islands and keys make it a great place to begin your
search for these hidden treasures. Happy hunting!
